Tesco telecoms expands empire

26 October 2006

Tesco telecoms is to launch its first supermarket telecom centre in an Extra Tesco store in Coatbridge, Scotland this week.

Chief executive officer of Tesco telecoms, Andy Dewhurst, was keen to emphasise that the store would cater for all telecom needs and was in no way just "another mobile phone shop".

He told the Evening Times: "We want to make choosing internet access, home phone services or a new mobile phone an enjoyable experience where customers feel they have all the information they need from helpful staff."

Mr Dewhurst recognised that the normal telecom buying experience could be stressful, complicated and pressured for customers. "Staff will not work on commission. They are there to help our customers make the right decisions when choosing telecoms services or a new mobile phone," he emphasised.

Telecom products and information leaflets will still be available in the aisles of the main stores.

Tesco telecoms has been making headlines this week with news that it is taking on supermarket giant Wal-Mart by campaigning to partner Bharti Enterprises, a telecoms group that owns FieldFresh Foods, as a franchise or supply chain partner.

If a deal with Bharti is done, it will be a coup for Tesco. Most of the big food retailers, including Wal-Mart, are competing to enter the lucrative Indian market.
