Icstis trend report shows landlines still crucial

10 November 2006

A report from the premium rate services regulator Ictstis, has found that despite the huge boom in mobile and broadband technology in the telecommunications industry, landline services are still crucial to everyday communications.

The article focuses on key trends within the telecommunications sector and reports that fixed lines still represent over 60% of the UK market. It claims landlines are key to many revenue services, with an especially high volume in participation broadcasting, such as telephone votes for television programmes.

It also confirmed that "the fixed and mobile worlds seem certain to coexist for the foreseeable future", with particular emphasis placed on the importance of triple and quad play systems in the future.

Triple and quad play systems combine cable TV, broadband, mobile and fixed line telephony all in one package under one provider. Currently the only telecommunications provider to offer quad play is ntl but rivals like Carphone Warehouse and BT are hot on their heels.

It is safe to say that with 160 billion minutes of fixed calls being made in the UK per year, the death knell for fixed line telephones is not ringing just yet.
