Directory enquiries to become free for landlines

5 December 2006

A new free-to-call directory enquiries number is to be launched, following a substantial drop in usage of the 118 numbers that replaced their predecessor, 192.

Consumers will be able to call 0800 118 FREE (3733) without cost from any landline, although mobile phone rates will vary. Consumers will also have to listen to a recorded advertisement before they are connected in order to cover costs.

Despite over 100 companies providing a directory enquiries service, consumers made their feelings about paying for the facility abundantly clear, with just 40% of adults using a 118 service compared to the 75% of adults who used it when it was 192.

It is thought that the call connect system, where the operator can directly connect the consumer to the person and then charge them at the 118 number's rate, also added confusion and made prices difficult to understand.

The price comparison and switching website uSwitch has welcomed the re-introduction of a free directory enquiries number for landline users with Steve Weller, head of communications services, commenting that the move heralded a "new direction for telephone directory enquiries services".

"We look forward to seeing a similar free service for the increasing number of people who call up directory enquiries from their mobile phone," he added.
