Festive calls home need not be expensive, says uSwitch

Christmas is traditionally a time for catching up with old acquaintances and reconnecting with your family, but if they live in a foreign country a quick chat can cost a lot of money.

According to the price comparison and switching website uSwitch, BT are at risk of being overcharged for long-distance calls, with the website claiming that BT's 10.4 million customers could be paying up to 92% too much to keep in touch.

Consumers should first check if their service can offer an international package. BT offers an add-on to their Option 1 deal where customers can pay an additional £1 per month and save over £8.40 on a two-hour call to Australia.

Similarly, TalkTalk's Talk 1 package can be upgraded to a Talk 2 International tariff, which provides unlimited evening and weekend calls to the UK and 28 countries for a fixed fee of £5.99 a month.

Steve Weller, head of communications services at uSwitch, commented: "Christmas is an expensive time of year and few pounds here and there can really mount up, so if you have family or friends abroad that you wish to call this Christmas, plan ahead and make sure you don't miss out on savings by not shopping around."
