BT hopes for 1m on eco-billing by end of May

2 May 2007

Telecommunications giant BT has said it aims to have at least one million of its customers on its eco-billing system by the end of this month.

Home phone customers are among those being encouraged to switch from having their statements sent to them in paper format to online billing in an effort to help the environment.

As a gesture to show how consumers who choose the online method are helping, BT has got together with the Woodland Trust and planted over 250,000 trees, spanning the area of 250 football pitches.

Gavin Patterson, Managing Director of BT Retail's consumer division, told ITPro.com: "We would hope this encourages companies to consider the opportunities presented by communications technologies to help them and their customers to cut carbon emissions and reduce waste."

Sue Holden, Chief Executive of the Woodland Trust, added that this was a good example of how companies could work together with their customers for a greener environment.

She continued: "The UK is way behind the rest of Europe when it comes to woodland cover, so it's important that we plant more trees.

"On an international scale, the UN made a plea for a billion trees to be planted as part of a global action to address climate change, encouraging everyone to make a pledge to plant a tree. Here's just one way companies can encourage their customers to contribute."
