Following BT's announcement last week that it was to offer substantial price cuts for customers moving from its Option 1 tariff to its Option 2 or Option 3 tariffs, TalkTalk has launched its latest initiative to win new customers over.
Not only is TalkTalk offering to lower its rates - matching BT's line rental charge of 10.50 - it has also boldly stated that it will give any consumer who can prove they are paying less under BT's tariffs 1,000.
Other cuts include the lowering of its evening and weekend charges on its Talk 2 plan, which now undercuts BT's rental by six pence per month.
Free international calls will also be made available to customers signing up for a 12-month contract, provided they pay just 2.50 extra per month. Although BT's version is twice the price at 5 per month, it does cover six more countries than TalkTalk's.
Chris Frost, Communications Expert at price comparison and switching service uSwitch.com, said that in an age of bundled telecommunications deals, it was great to see home phone providers offering better standalone tariffs too.
"This move may well be the spark that ignites a price war between home telephone providers as they compete to gain and retain customers," he added.
TalkTalk's bold moves may prompt other home phone providers into offering similar price cuts, with Pipex among those being rumoured to consider their options.
