Ofcom gives 03 number update

14 November 2007

Ofcom has released an update into the new 03 landline numbers.

The 03 prefix was first made available for allocation this March by the watchdog - and has been purchased by organisations as a "guaranteed price" customer line.

Any call to an 03 number must be guaranteed to cost the same or less than 01 and 02 prefixes under Ofcom rules.

Ofcom Chief Executive, Ed Richards said: "Consumers will be able to dial 03 and will be able to have confidence about the cost of their call. We have seen a huge amount of interest in these numbers.

"We expect consumers to see the advantages of these new numbers as they start to be used by more and more public service organisations."

The watchdog also announced yesterday that over 13 million of the new numbers have been allocated to around 80 providers since the process started.

In turn, these providers are allowed to allocate the 03 prefixes to other organisations - with charitable, public sector and commercial organisations all permitted to apply.
