BT and Virgin Media in fixed-line support tie-up

7 December 2007

Virgin Media customers can be assured of better home-phone line service in the future thanks to a new deal with BT Wholesale.

BT Wholesale has announced a five-year deal to provide fixed-line telephone switch operations and support to Virgin Media.

The £98 million managed telephony agreement means that BT will undertake the maintenance of Virgin Media's fixed-line voice switching network, as well as a number of existing support contracts.

The move is good news for households, Sally Davis, Chief Executive for BT Wholesale, explained, as it will assist Virgin Media in continuing "to meet its customers' needs".

Meanwhile Paul Weir, Managing Director of Networks for Virgin Media, said the move paved the way for greater technological development in the future.

"Our telephony switching network remains an important asset within Virgin Media, and by utilising BT Wholesale we gain operational cost efficiencies ahead of the network's eventual upgrade to Voice over Internet Protocol technology, whilst keeping guaranteed levels of service for our customers," he said.

Virgin Media's fixed-line voice switching network currently supports around 20% of all landline telephone connections in the UK.
