Ofcom hails increased competition

11 December 2007

Ofcom released a report yesterday on BT - which showed higher levels of customer switching and industry competitiveness in the telecoms and broadband sector.

The purpose of the report was to detail the telecom's compliance with the 'Undertakings' the watchdog set out for it to follow in 2005 to boost competition.

According to Ofcom, customer switching in the home phone sector has increased by 8% year-on-year - almost matched by the 5% who changed broadband provider.

Customer choice has also increased since 2005 - with 60% of users now able to choose between four or more providers.

Ofcom Chief Executive, Ed Richards, said: "BT's progress in implementing the Undertakings has made a very real contribution to the development of the UK telecoms market - the UK now has one of the most competitive markets anywhere in the world."

BT was praised by the industry regulator for its Openreach wing - which helps customers to make the switch from its own services to other providers if they wish to do so.

Mr Richards added: "We want to ensure that Openreach has very clear incentives to deliver consistently high quality service to all of its customers - these measures will benefit all business and residential consumers and all competitive communications providers that use BT's network."
