Britain's leading home phone provider, BT, is aiming to improve the energy efficiency of its handsets in a new £2 million initiative.
The telecoms firm made the announcement at the launch of four new home phones yesterday - which have been designed to cut their power outputs by 50% over previous models.
BT also set itself a target of making 90% of the home phone handsets more energy efficient by the end of the year.
Group Managing Director at BT Gavin Patterson commented: "BT has continued to address environmental concerns by launching [the] phones.
"We know that our customers are just as keen to reduce environmental impact and, through these phones, we will jointly make a significant difference."
According to figures from the firm, by replacing outdated home phones with more energy efficient equivalents, around 195,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over the next three years will be saved.
In turn, the power savings could also save consumers money on electricity bills.
