GP surgeries face ban on 084 numbers

19 December 2008

The government is considering a ban on the use of 084 numbers in GP surgeries following calls from campaigners who claim they go against NHS principles.

Many surgeries use 084 numbers because they claim it enables them to offer a better service to patients by keeping them in a queue when lines are busy.

But the numbers often cost more than a local call, which has angered campaigners who point out that the NHS should be free at the point of need.

Those calling from mobile phones instead of a home phone line are charged up to 40 pence per minute, they point out.

A consultation has now been launched to find out what the public think of the 084 numbers and whether patients think they should be banned or remain in place.

Health Minister Ben Bradshaw said: "We are concerned that some people are paying above the odds to contact the NHS."

Earlier this year, Ofcom said its warnings for companies not to raise rates on 0870 numbers had gone unheeded and some firms were still putting up prices.

Customers can compare home phone packages online to make sure they are not paying over the odds for their calls.
