Fixed line telecoms targeted

18 March 2009

Mis-selling in the telecoms industry is to be clamped down on by regulatory body Ofcom.

New rules will be introduced to prevent misleading sales in the market and slamming, a term which is used to describe a customer being switched to another provider without their knowledge.

Chief executive of Ofcom Ed Richards says: "Ofcom wants to stamp out mis-selling in the telecoms market so that consumers can get the best that competition brings.

"Our announcements are designed to tackle misleading sales practices in landline and mobile services."

It is suggested that the new regulations will give consumers more information about the services they receive, which is hoped will reduce the levels of complaints.

Earlier this year, Ofcom announced it was making way for the UK to receive faster, more reliable broadband by opening up spectrum bands. Looking for a new home phone package? Search for the best deal using uSwitch.com.
