The actions of dishonest drivers are proving costly for many British motorists, the Co-operative Insurance has revealed.

It believes that genuine motorists are forking out around £1.25 billion a year to compensate for those who are on the roads without car insurance, an MOT or even a licence.

Statistics from the company show that around £50 is added to the average policy as a result of the actions of these people.

Tim Franklin, Chief Operating Officer at The Co-operative Financial Services, said the risk posed to other drivers by these motorists is "unjustified".

"If you are an uninsured driver you need to think about the consequences of your actions and purchase insurance," Mr Franklin continued.

He added that people who are aware that someone is flouting the law need to let the relevant authorities know to avoid making the problem worse.

Defaqto recently called on car insurance companies to give more transparent information on direct debit fees imposed on customers.
