There has been an increase in the number of motorists trying to pass off wear and tear on their cars as something worthy of a claim on their insurance policy, it has been claimed.

Swiftcover.com identified a number of tricks that drivers are pulling to get their insurers to pay for repairs, such as getting garages to fix problems not related to their claims.

Another scam pulled by drivers is asking their garage to also carry out an MOT on their vehicle, which is then claimed as a free service on their car insurance.

This follows results from a study by Co-operative Insurance, which found that honest drivers are footing bills of £1.25 billion a year due to fraudulent claims.

"Millions of people are deliberately flouting the law by not insuring their cars at massive cost to honest road users," explained Tim Franklin, Chief Operating Officer.
