Many drivers regularly suffer from a form of road rage, the latest Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) figures show.

The group polled 1,400 people, of which 70% said they had become angry with other drivers at some point.

Furthermore, 28% said their own driving abilities came under threat as a result of getting annoyed with other road users, potentially increasing their chances of making a car insurance claim.

IAM Director of Policy and Research Neil Greig warned: "With long commutes and increased congestion making driving particularly stressful, drivers must learn to manage the 'red mist'."

Passengers were also found to be a major distraction for British motorists, as 30% identified this is their main interference when behind the wheel.

Continental Tyres recently revealed similar findings, which showed almost four million drivers find their passengers an annoyance, with many opting to drive alone as a result.
