Anyone adventurous enough to be heading off on a sports holiday this winter needs to make sure they have the necessary cover.

This is according to esure, which found that 34% of UK adults would try out a sports activity on holiday without checking if it was covered by their travel insurance policy.

The company advised holidaymakers to read the small print of any policy carefully before making a purchase.

Mike Pickard, Head of Travel Insurance at esure, said: "If in doubt, call your insurer or consider leaving it to the professionals rather than risk facing a hefty medical bill if you were injured."

He suggested that the Winter Olympics are likely to encourage people to try out a new sport.

Many people who took domestic holidays in 2009 are set to abandon the UK this year, simonseeks.com recently found.

More than half (56%) of those surveyed are to turn their backs on staycations in 2010.
