After four bills, O2 sent a further letter, warning Mrs Reddington that bailiffs could call round to recompense the mobile phone provider.

The bills and subsequent bailiff threats baffled the Upchurch pensioner, since she had not only never used the handset, but she had also returned the mobile to the O2 within two weeks of purchase.

"I keep telling O2 I sent back the phone but they don't listen," Mrs Reddington told the People newspaper. "I'm a pensioner and there's no way I would rack up that kind of bill - I could never afford it."

Mrs Reddington even had proof from the Royal Mail that she had sent the unwanted Motorola handset back to O2, but she insists that the provider refused to believe her at first.

O2 has since recognised its mistake and apologised to Mrs Reddington, explaining that the misunderstanding occurred because of an error in registering the return of the handset and that the provider has now wiped the debt.

A spokesperson for the company said: "We absolutely apologise for any inconvenience caused to Mrs Reddington and have sent her a cheque for £50 to cover her costs."

There's plenty of choice so let uSwitch.com help you find the perfect mobile phone.
