Experts say that without cleaning and disinfecting your mobile phone on a regular basis, more bacteria could spread, potentially causing illness.

"The phones contained more skin bacteria than the any other object," said Joanne Verran, Professor of microbiology at Manchester Metropolitan University.

"This could be due to the fact that this type of bacteria increases in high temperatures and our phones are perfect for breeding these germs as they're kept warm and cosy in our pockets, handbags and briefcases.

"These bacteria are toxic to humans and can cause infections if they have the opportunity to enter the body," she warned.

Consumers add to the bacteria problem by answering the phone in some less than hygienic places, including while being sat on the loo. Shockingly, 57% of men, happily chat on the phone whilst on the toilet and 42.6% of women admitted to answering the phone during sex.

A spokesperson for Dial-A-Phone commented: "We take our phones everywhere, being in close contact with our mouths, hands and faces their bound to collect all sorts of nasty germs...our advice to phone users is to ensure they clean them regularly with an antibacterial wipe!"

What tariff should you choose?
