<div class="rxbodyfield" xmlns:o="urn:www.microsoft.com/office" xmlns:st1="urn:www.microsoft.com/smarttags" xmlns:st2="urn:www.microsoft.com/smarttags2" xmlns:w="urn:www.microsoft.com/word" xmlns:x="urn:www.microsoft.com/excel"><p>According to the Energy Saving Trust, £47 million is wasted each year by consumers leaving their mobile phone chargers plugged in after they have finished charging their phone. </p><p>Not only does this squander a huge amount of money, it is a waste of electricity, emitting up to 250,000 tonnes of carbon each year.</p><p>Now mobile phone giant Nokia has declared that as of next year will come equipped with a written reminder telling consumers to unplug their phone when their battery is fully charged. </p><p>The move follows the Nokia-led initiative back in September for mobile phone companies to commit to an environmental action plan which would focus on reducing the industry's carbon footprint.</p><p>Nokia has estimated that if just 10% of European phone users unplugged their phone once it was fully charged, it would save enough energy to power 60,000 homes annually.</p><p>Nokia's director of environmental affairs, Markus Terho, told IT weekly: "We know customers want to see more action from companies to help them reduce their environmental impact." </p><p>He added that this reminder alert programme was just a small part of their eco-friendly drive with Nokia's take-back recycling service for old mobile phones already in place and a large amount of money invested into developing technology which will see an overall reduction in energy consumption of chargers.</p><p>For a great deal on your mobile phone, uSwitch.com can help.
