Glasgow named as mobile theft capital

3 April 2007

Consumers in Glasgow are more likely to have their mobile phone stolen there than anywhere else in the country.

Nearly one in three residents of the Scottish city have had their mobile stolen - with one in five cases involving phones being snatched from bags. Belfast and Liverpool came in a close second and third respectively.

The report, carried out by insurance firm CPP Phone-Safe, showed that most phones were pinched in the evening, with 22% of victims reporting having their mobiles stolen in a bar compared to just 9% who said their phones were taken while they were in the high street.

There was some good news however, it appears that consumers are becoming more self-aware about their mobile phones with nearly all phones being fitted with security codes which once activated prevent any other SIM cards working with that handset.

In addition, over half of respondents who had fallen victim to phone theft had reported the incident to the police within the first hour.

JohnWalkley, Head of Mobile Phone Security at CPP Phone-safe, commented: "It's alarming how common mobile theft is becoming.

"It's vital to always be on guard for opportunists - especially if you are talking on the phone while walking in the street, or have it on show in a pub or club."
