More mobiles for young children

11 April 2007

The proliferation of mobile phones in the UK is reaching all generations of society, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

It has today published its Social Trends 37 report, the main theme of which is children and young people.

While the majority of adults now seem to rely on their mobile phone more than ever, it would appear this necessity is filtering down to younger people.

The ONS figures show that 49% of children aged between eight and 11 now own their own mobile phone.

Meanwhile, for those between the ages of 12 and 15, this increases to 82%.

However, parents whose children use a mobile phone should ensure that they are being well looked after.

A recent study by CPP Phonesafe into increasing mobile phone theft states that "most people rarely leave home without their mobile phone, so it is vital to always be on guard for opportunists".

The ONS Social Trends reports are designed to bring together statistics on various aspects of UK society to show differences which have emerged over the years.
