Analysts from the Multimedia Research Group in America have estimated that by 2011, 244 million handsets will be able to support mobile television, with the biggest boom expected to occur in 2009.
In 2009 alone, the researchers expected 53 million mobile TV-ready handsets to be in circulation worldwide, rising to 82 million by 2011.
Report author and principal analyst at Rethink Research Associates (which wrote up the reports in the UK) Peter White, said that there were already at least 80 mobile television trials in operation.
"Most of these new handsets will deliver Quarter Video Graphics Array (QVGA) quality screens, where voices and lips are synchronised, where there is no shadowing on the screen, and where the resolution is good enough to watch for 30 minutes at a time and beyond," Mr White added.
The estimates are almost double those quoted in the Multimedia Research Group's previous forecast and takes over 55 countries into account.
