Mobile TV slides up non-voice usage list

1 June 2007

More consumers are using mobile TV features than any other non-voice related function on their mobile phones, according to figures from Analysys.

The global adviser on telecoms, IT and media said that while sending SMS text messages was still top of the list, with O2 recording the highest levels of texts being sent in the UK, mobile TV and similar applications were starting to take hold thanks to the introduction of more 3G phones.

Increasing saturation of the mobile phone market, particularly in western European nations like Britain, means that 3G applications are fast becoming the latest way for mobile operators to entice consumers to part with their hard-earned cash.

Despite this, some mobile operators were still not offering non-voice content which is attractive enough to boost consumer numbers, causing many of the mobile providers to consider a rethink on how to increase their revenues.

"There's no excuse for mobile operators failing to increase non-voice revenue, yet many are finding it difficult, despite the availability of 3G networks", report co-author Dr Alastair Brydon said.

"3 shows how mobile TV services can be effective at capturing the imagination of mobile users and delivering much-needed revenue beyond voice and SMS."
