One of the most anticipated mobile phones - the Apple iPhone - has finally been given the release date of June 29th.
Costing around 250 for the 4Gb model or 300 for the 8Gb, the iPhone will initially only be available in America, though rumours suggest that Apple will have the handset in British stores in time for the Christmas rush.
Apple's biggest hope is that the iPhone will revolutionise the way consumers use their mobile phones in the same way that the iPod changed the way we used mp3 players.
Boasting a whole range of features which make the handset more than a phone, the iPhone is also hoped to rise to the top of the 'smart phone' charts, currently dominated by the Blackberry 8300 Curve and Nokia's N95.
Critics of Apple's efforts have said that the phone uses the older GSM technology that its rivals are already starting to phase out. It also doesn't have a GPS tracking system which Nokia's N95 offers consumers and is considerably heavier than either of the main competitors.
Having said that, it does have a superior built-in memory, with the Nokia only managing 160MB and the Blackberry offering just 64MB and it boasts touchscreen technology, including a touchscreen qwerty-style keyboard.
British operators of the iPhone have not yet been announced, but mobile industry insiders seem to think that T-Mobile will be offered the handset first. Eager Brits are being advised not to purchase the handset from the States since it will only work with the American telecom AT&T at present.
