New technology will allow consumers to interact with radio stations via their mobile phone in more ways than ever before, according to O2.
Visual Radio will work in the same way as all other radio station receivers in mobile phones but when a consumer tunes into Virgin Radio via an O2 handset, the user "will get a completely new kind of radio experience".
James Parton, Head of Music, TV and Radio products at O2, said that the new technology will allow users to "really interact" with the show, whether it's with the actual DJ themselves or downloading ringtones of your favourite songs over the O2 network.
James Cridland, Director of Digital Media at Virgin Radio, added: "Visual Radio enhances the listening experience and interaction with the station for every listener. It can also give advertisers a more dynamic platform to communicate their messages."
To begin with, listeners will be able to see the 'now playing' information, artist pictures, DJ information and be able to participate in unique quizzes and enter competitions, but later live video streaming could be incorporated.
