Roaming calls to get cheaper from next month

3 July 2007

Making a mobile phone call while abroad is soon to get cheaper, with a new tariff designed to save consumers money.

Mobile operators now have one month to advertise the new prices of a new Eurotariff, under European Commission legislation.

The Eurotariff will be put in place at the end of this month, with mobile phone roaming charges capped at 33 pence per minute for outgoing calls and 16p for incoming, plus VAT.

Backed by the European parliament, the new regulations have come into force after concerns about large phone bills experienced by holiday makers and frequent overseas travellers.

Paul Rubig from the European People's Party and European Democrats said: "Every European mobile user will be able to opt into a cheaper tariff by July 2007.

"The EU has delivered within a record period of 11 months. Now I urge operators to deliver to their customers in a fair, transparent and quick manner, so that EU citizens can benefit from the regulation as soon as possible."

The situation is set to improve further over the next few years, with caps on roaming charges to be reduced even more by 2009.
