All mobiles to include broadband, say analysts

25 July 2007

Mobile broadband is coming to mobile phone customers whether they like it or not, according to a Frost & Sullivan spokesperson.

The mobile phone news website 3g.co.uk has claimed that the mobile phone voice call market is saturated, and that the average revenue per user (Arpu) cannot be raised.

As a result, mobile phone operators will be looking at raising Arpu through new services, which will cause a push in the broadband market.

"European carriers' dependence on voice to increase Arpu can no longer be a driving factor, given the prevailing saturated market and various alternatives such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and reduced local and roaming call charges due to regulatory policies", argued Frost & Sullivan Programme Manager Luke Thomas.

"As a result, carriers are now keenly looking at various next generation mobile broadband technologies so as to increase their Arpu in data applications (broadband)."

The technology may have to wait until security features are bolstered however, as only yesterday a technology firm became the first to find a vulnerability in the iPhone's connection to the Internet, meaning personal information could be accessed remotely.
