The European Commission yesterday launched proposals to emancipate mobile phone operators from restrictions regarding the radio spectrums in which they operate.
For consumers, this will mean services such as 3G video streaming, fast downloads and video calls will all become, more widely available, faster, and cheaper.
"Radio spectrum is a crucial economic resource which must be properly managed across Europe to unlock the potential of our telecoms sector," said Viviane Reding, the EU's Telecoms Commissioner.
The suggestions, if they become law, would mean that customers would be faced with a greater number of service providers, as geographical barriers to wireless services would be broken down.
The comments come at an exciting time for technology-minded mobile phone customers as a report yesterday concluded that 3G services will be the focus of mobile phone providers in the near future, due to a saturation of the voice-call market.
