One in four people in the UK now has more than four mobile phones, new research has uncovered.
According to a study by first direct, 9% of people have multiple handsets, with 40% of Britons having more than one number.
Indeed, the report found that there are now more mobile phones than people in the UK, with the adult UK population sharing over 70 million SIM cards and more than 71 million handsets.
Furthermore, men look to be more enamoured with their mobile phone, with 43% of them admitting to having more than one number compared to eight million women.
Alison Leonard, first direct's Head of e-commerce, said: "The mobile phone has become the remote control for our lives. We use our mobiles to keep in touch with friends, family and workmates.
"But the days when we kept just one handset are fast fading, as many of us have different phones for different purposes.
"With one phone for work, one for friends and potentially a personal organiser or BlackBerry as well, mobilemania has swept the nation," she added.
Only 12% of adults do not have a mobile phone.
