T-Mobile encourages recycling with SIM deal

27 September 2007

T-Mobile has launched a new SIM only service for mobile phone users happy to keep hold of their old handsets.

The mobile phone operator has announced details of its Just SIM deal, allowing customers with a 'green' conscience to buy a SIM card and retain their old mobile phone.

Such a deal may help to reduce the high volume of unwanted mobile handsets that have to be safely disposed of each year in the UK.

Customers also have the freedom of leaving the service with 30 days' notice, with tariffs starting at £20 per month, cheaper than a standard 18-month tie-in.

Any network UK calls are 30 pence per minute, with anytime, any network SMS text messages costing 10 pence.

"We're rewarding people who provide their own handsets with minutes and texts," Phil Barden, Director of Consumer Business at T-Mobile, said.

"With no long-term contract, Just SIM is an intermediate option between pay-as-you-go and longer contracts and gives customers the freedom to choose a new handset and a longer contract when they're ready," he added.

T-Mobile's deal follows a similar service launched by O2 in July, called Simplicity.
