Around 52 million consumers could soon be paying for milk, bread and newspapers at their local shop simply by swiping their mobile handset, it has been claimed.
New mobile technologies will mean that consumers will be able to use mobile payment methods to pay for everyday goods and services as soon as 2011, a new study by Juniper Research states.
Advances in technology including NFC (Near Field Communication) will help to offer consumers a wider range of payment methods in the next few years, giving an easy alternative to cash, credit and debit cards.
By 2011, around 12% of the total mobile phones in operation will be able to use contactless payment systems, representing nearly 470 million NFC handsets worldwide, Juniper Research found.
Contactless payment systems have recently made the headlines with the launch of Barclays new One Pulse card.
The payment card features normal credit card facilities and Transport for London Oyster card capabilities with a contactless payment system allowing busy workers to pay for inexpensive items just by swiping their card in shops and cafes.
