Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue has become an unlikely innovator in the mobile phones market.
Reuters reports that the singer's recently launched Kylie Konnect scheme represented a watershed moment, due to its being the first ever artist-based mobile social networking platform.
Using their internet-enabled mobile phones, Kylie fans are able to log on to the Kylie Konnect website and create their own profile in the style of popular social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook.
It is estimated that 10,000 users have already signed up to blog, share photos or discuss the star's latest album X with other fans.
Head of Digital at Kylie's record label Parlophone Dan Duncombe commented: "Kylie Konnect is a great way of engaging fans wherever they are in the world, using multi platforms and great content."
The rise of social networking sites has been one of the major internet talking points of the past twelve months.
According to figures from data firm Alexa, MySpace, Facebook and Orkut - a networking site popular in Latin America - are currently the sixth, seventh and tenth most visited websites in the world.
