Nationwide allows banking by iPhone

11 December 2007

Owners of Apple's new iPhone will be able to bank with Nationwide online through the devices, the financial services firm has announced.
Users of the iPod Touch will also be able to access the sites to check their accounts.

The decision to enable the banking sites for iPhone users came following Nationwide research showing that 53% of customers enjoyed using the internet to access their accounts because of its "convenience".

Mik Hodsdon, Nationwide divisional director, said: "Being able to manage your finances from your mobile phone or iPod couldn’t be easier - and as hardly any online banks are currently able to offer access through these devices, I am pleased to be able to tell our customers that they are able to get online straight away.

"It's always a good idea to check your accounts regularly and we are delighted to be able to offer our members greater access to do just that."

Nationwide was the first UK financial services provider to launch an online bank in 1997.

According to a study from Abbey last month, the public's enthusiasm for banking on the internet is on the up.

Almost three quarters (74%) of poll respondents said that using the web to manage their accounts gave them a "better understanding" of their personal finances.
