First iPhone trojan discovered

9 January 2008

The first Trojan virus affecting Apple's iPhone has been detected, security firm F-Secure has said.

Hackers posted the virus on the popular modification forum for owners of the mobile phone, ModMyiFone.com.

When downloaded onto the phone, the word "shoes" was displayed when the device was powered-up.

Users attempting to uninstall the program containing the virus then faced various files being deleted from the phone.

Symantec researcher Orla Cox, writing in a blog post reported on Zdnet.co.uk, commented: "This is technically the first Trojan horse seen for the iPhone; however, it does appear to be more of a prank than an actual threat.

"The impact of uninstalling the Trojan would appear to be an unintended side effect."

Although further, more serious, virus attacks are expected to hit the top-selling mobile phone in future - the "shoes" threat has now been nullified.

The website hosting the malicious programme has been taken offline.
