O2: Mobile internet abroad will be cheaper

15 January 2008

Network provider O2 has announced changes to its data-roaming prices for customers travelling around Europe.

The firm said yesterday that it would reduce internet costs for trans-continental handset use by its British, Irish, Spanish, German and Czech customers.

Price cuts of around 60-80% for UK customers using their phones to email or surf the web abroad are anticipated.

For the other O2 customers, an average 40% reduction will be enforced.

O2 Europe Chairman Matthew Key said that the price announcement was a continuation of the firm's plans to reduce data-roaming costs - which started with the decision last year to make receiving calls abroad free for all customers.

"Today's announcement honours the promise we made to customers at that time that, having reduced the cost of calling whilst abroad, we would bring down the last barrier in roaming charges - data," he added.

"It also addresses the issue of transparency where, for too long, customers have been confused by a plethora of tariffs and fees…the published rate will apply across the board - regardless of the mobile network used."

O2 also said yesterday that text messaging in other European countries will also be reduced to around half price.

The cuts are to come into effect by July 2008.
