Google launches mobile phone system upgrade

1 February 2008

The world's most popular search engine, Google, has launched a beefed-up search service for mobile phones.

Google said that its new search functions allow quicker and more relevant results - and will be incorporated in its recently-launched mobile phone operating system, Android.

The move is a reflection of the increased importance internet firms are placing on mobile phone technology - and mirrors a similar upgrade from rivals Yahoo! late last year.

Search engines are anticipated to become particularly important for mobile internet users, who wish to find out local listings and information - such as cinema times - while 'on the move'.

A Google spokesman commented: "Mobile search is more about seeking than browsing...the big thing that people will notice [about the service] is that they just get the results they want, without them having to think ahead of time what sort of information they are looking for.

"You don't have to click through so many pages on that tiny little screen and on those tiny little buttons."
