Orange and T-Mobile collaborate on handset TV trial

13 February 2008

A new mobile TV network is being trialled by network operators T-Mobile and Orange, it has been announced.

Using part of the 3G spectrum, the trial will take place in West London - and will utilise UK-developed TDTV technology to provide a "mobile TV and multimedia broadcast service" for local users.

The announcement was made by the mobile phone firms at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona yesterday.

Previously, a similar joint mobile TV service launched in 2006 by BT and Virgin Media was forced to close through lack of interest, ZDNet.co.uk reports.

The new project is scheduled to incorporate up to 100 different channels in high definition, including several from digital TV broadcasters BBC and BSkyB.

Several digital radio stations are also anticipated to be made available.

The service will be enabled due to Orange and T-Mobile users either through a new handset or through a small wireless receiver that users attach to their phones.
