Mobile web access takes another step forward with the announcement that Microsoft's Silverlight software will be available for S60 on Symbian OS smartphone software, Nokia says.
Silverlight, a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in, delivers next-generation access to media and interactive applications and is already used in thousands of other applications.
Nokia suggested the move was consumer-driven and the company was keen to embrace innovation.
Lee Williams, senior vice president in Nokia's devices software organisation, said: "Today's consumers are very clear in what they want: easy access to tightly integrated services and data on any device."
Working with Microsoft would create "opportunities and additional choices for the development community, S60 licensees and the industry as a whole", he added.
Silverlight will be demonstrated on S60 during Microsoft's keynote speech at its MIX08 conference in Las Vegas on March 5th.
The BBC's technology editor, Darren Waters, said the move could enable users to run applications from their computers just as well on their mobile phones.
