Row starts over mobile mast

25 March 2008

A row has developed in the Sunderland area after a new mobile telephone mast was erected in what council officials have called an "error".

Calls have been made to bring the device down after O2 placed it at Ashdown Road in Farringdon, as a result of getting an approval letter from Sunderland city council, reports the Sunderland Echo.

Locals had suggested the mast could be responsible for impacting upon their health and also objected to its construction because house prices near to it may fall.

Director of Redevelopment and Regeneration at Sunderland city council Phil Barrett revealed that talks are underway in an attempt to resolve the situation.

Conservative Councillor for St Chad's ward Michael Dixon added that O2 was "very quick off the mark" to place the mast where it is, despite the fact that the council realised its mistake "almost immediately".

Recently, officials at a number of firms such as T-Mobile claimed that they want to reduce the number of masts they use in order to save money.
