Many drivers in North Wales are apparently endangering the lives of others and putting themselves at risk, new figures have suggested.
Statistics from the Ministry of Justice said that 3,083 fines were given out to motorists in the region in 2006 for using their mobile telephones whilst behind the wheel, reports the Daily Post.
New safety laws introduced in this area are a good idea, suggested spokesman at the Association of British Drivers Hugh Gladon, but added that the law does not make sense in some instances.
"Perhaps the law is over the top because it allows no leeway at all. Using a mobile phone while the car is stationary in traffic, in the queue behind an accident for instance, is just as banned," he told the paper.
North Wales police also confirmed that about 3,000 motorists were also caught breaking the law in 2007.
The fresh rules have meant that since February 27th 2007 drivers caught on their mobiles while in control of a vehicle have been handed three penalty points and a £60 fine.
