The unveiling of several "iconic" handsets is likely to boost sales in the mobile phone market this year, according to ABI Research. The organisation said 2008 would be a strong year for mobile manufacturers as new product launches encourage mobile users to consider replacement. Apple's second generation iPhone has already generated a buzz among consumers and the expected debut of a new BlackBerry model from RIM is likely to inspire interest. Kevin Burden, research director at ABI, said: "2008 should still be a very good year for the global mobile phone market." He said there is a desire among mobile phone manufacturers to offer greater simplicity when it comes to new handsets and to make better use of the technology already available, rather than introducing new features and services. This is proving attractive to consumers and according to Mr Burden is "going to go a long way towards is ensuring users' acceptance of new phones and new applications". Meanwhile handset manufacturer LG Electronics has reported an 84% rise in quarterly profits thanks to strong mobile phone sales. The firm sold 27.7 million handsets in the three months to July.
