Mobile phone connections 'on the increase'

14 August 2008

The number of mobile phone connections serving UK consumers has risen as more people use mobiles to call, text and access the internet, figures from Ofcom reveal. According to the broadcasting regulator, there were almost 74 million mobile phone connections in the UK by the end of 2007. This was an increase of 3.7 million over the 12 month period from the end of 2006. And mobile phone customers are using their devices for a variety of activities, with simple calling being a thing of the past. Almost 60 billion text messages were sent in 2007, with the average mobile phone user sending 67 a month, up from 53 in 2006. Internet access is also a popular mobile phone activity. There were 511,000 new mobile broadband connections in the UK between February and June this year. The Mobile Data Association predicts that mobile internet will grow by 20% next year as consumers purchase new handsets with broadband capabilities.
