Asda Mobile cuts pay as you go call costs

22 August 2008

Asda Mobile has announced that customers on its pay as you go (PAYG) tariff will see their call costs cut, potentially saving them £2.38 billion a year. Calls will now cost 8p per minute and texts 4p each, which according to Asda Mobile makes it the lowest PAYG operator in Britain. The new rates will apply to calls made at all times of the day and night to any UK mobile network or landline telephone, the company said. Citing research from Ofcom which reveals that the average UK user spends £17.59 a month on their mobile phone, Asda Mobile claims its PAYG customers could save an extra £53 a year. Darren Blackhurst, Asda's Trading Director, commented: "We are giving customers the UK's cheapest mobile call plan that's simple to understand and a tariff with no hidden extras." The announcement comes after Vodafone raised its minimum call charges by 25% for customers who exceed their monthly tariff allowance. O2 and T-Mobile also increased their charges last month.
