BBC iPlayer comes to Nokia mobiles

8 September 2008

Mobile phone users with Nokia handsets will soon be able to download and watch their favourite BBC programmes on the go. The broadcaster has struck a deal with the mobile phone maker which will give owners of the Nokia N96 handset access to the BBC iPlayer. From October 1st, consumers will be able to download content to their mobile, where it will remain for seven days before being wiped from the phone's memory. This means users can watch BBC programmes on their handsets as many times as they wish during the seven-day period without being in a Wi-Fi or 3G area. Simon Ainslie, Managing Director of Nokia, said: "The Nokia N96 is going to provide a gateway to quality viewing on the move and will the raise the bar for mobile screen and audio entertainment." Figures from the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board compiled by TV marketing body Thinkbox in August revealed that catch-up services like the BBC iPlayer may actually provide a boost for traditional broadcast television.
