Mobile phone users concerned about hacking may be interested to hear that mobile networks are more secure than the internet, according to Get Safe Online. Managing Director Tony Neat said mobile phone hacking is a relatively new concept and stressed that mobile networks are well managed compared to the web. However, he added: "There's a slight difference when we start to look at access to the internet through mobile phones." He explained that "social engineering" is beginning to pose problems as fraudsters send submission emails and phishing texts which prompt consumers to log into a website or call a premium rate number. According to Get Safe Online, mobile phone users can protect themselves by switching off Bluetooth functions when not in use and using "common sense" when receiving unexpected text messages. The Emerging Cyber Threats Report for 2009 published by the Georgia Tech Information Security Center shows that antivirus software on mobile phones can reduce battery life. It suggests new approaches will be needed in the future to prevent this from happening.
