The UK's mobile phone users are sending a total of 217 million text messages every day - around 60 million more than this time last year, according to new research by the Mobile Data Association (MDA). It found that between July and September, some 72.9 billion texts were being sent by British consumers every year as mobile phones become an increasingly important part of people's everyday lives. Picture and video-based messages are also becoming more popular, with almost 1.5 million sent every day - an increase of 20% on the same period last year. Steve Reynolds, Chairman of the MDA, said: "The mobile landscape is constantly evolving. New mobile phones, with easy to use software and creative tariffs from the mobile networks, are encouraging people of all ages to use more of their functionality." Meanwhile, a survey commissioned by AT&T has revealed that 40% of mobile phone customers currently dating believe text messaging plays a vital role in their relationship.
