Train operator adopts anti-mobile technology

3 November 2008

Train operator C2C has adopted special technology that blocks mobile phone signals and ensures that passengers are unable to use their devices in certain carriages. Most trains have designated quiet zones, but not all passengers adhere to the rules. To combat the problem, C2C has coated the windows in a special high-tech film. The film allows light in, but prevents Wi-Fi, radio and phone signals from penetrating. A trial of the technology is due to take place soon. Bold signs will notify passengers entering the quiet carriage that their mobile phones and other devices will not work. If successful, the technology will be rolled out across the C2C network. The train company operates services between Essex and London. Meanwhile, a Canadian company has developed new mobile phone software that can prevent drivers from making and receiving calls while on the move by intercepting signals to mobiles travelling at automobile speeds.
