Carphone Warehouse launches credit crunch mobile

14 November 2008

The Carphone Warehouse is offering what it claims is the UK's cheapest mobile phone for consumers feeling the pinch during the economic downturn.

For just £4.95 consumers can pick up the Samsung B130 handset on a pay-as-you-go basis, saving tens or possibly hundreds of pounds.

The phone does not feature any of the fancier applications associated with today's generation of smart phones, which means it is unlikely to appeal to gadget-lovers.

However, it does come with basics such as WAP browsing, MP3 ringtones, a currency converter, a calendar and a voice recorder, making it ideal for those who simply make calls and send text messages, Carphone Warehouse claims.

Due to its cheap price tag, some consumers may choose to purchase the Samsung B130 as an extra handset in case of emergencies.

Meanwhile, for those who use their mobiles to access social networking sites, the 3G mobile phone operator 3 is launching a new handset designed specifically for Facebook fans and allowing for faster and easier navigation of the website.
