Bmi pilots onboard text message service

16 December 2008

Bmi has launched a new trial service that permits passengers to send text messages from their mobile phones during their flight.

The airline is piloting the facility - which will also allows internet access from laptops - on aircraft travelling between Heathrow and Moscow.

Commenting on the service, Bmi's managing director Peter Spencer said: "It opens up an exciting new era of travellers being able to stay in touch by text message and email whilst in the air."

Passengers will not, however, be able to use their mobile phones to make calls - a decision reached after considering the social impacts this could have.

Onboard technology allowing the sending of text messages will be provided by OnAir. Charges will be determined by individual mobile phone operators.

Airlines including Air France and Emirates are currently testing technology that allows passengers on their flights to make calls from the air.
