23 December 2008

A new report by Orange has revealed that increasing numbers of people are accessing social networking websites via their mobile phones. The research shows that 640,000 Orange customers are logging on to sites such as Facebook and Bebo from their handsets. As a result, the mobile operator is recording over 166 million page impressions on mobile social networking sites each month. Paul Jevons, Director of Products, Portals and Services at Orange, said: "The mobile phone has become a truly interactive channel that fosters the formation of communities through social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo." The report also shows that the number of 3G customers on the Orange network has increased by 86% since July to reach an estimated 2.9 million. Meanwhile, research conducted by Monitise and the Future Foundation reveals that mobile banking is set to take off next year, with one million UK bank customers already using it.
